This has probably been covered already, but in the off chance that it hasn't, here is what i found interesting.
I needed a new output shaft for a 750 Sport motor (fine spline) for my TT project. I found that a 1998 Monster 750 output shaft is identical in every way, including the gears & shaft itself, save for the fact that the shaft is a chunk longer at the sprocket. After setting the rear 5.5" rim in the center of bike & adjusting the rear sprocket placement (left to right) to adequately clear the tire & swing arm (thanks Cranky Roller), i found that i needed a front sprocket that would be flush with the standard retainer plate, flipping whatever hub it came with inward so there is zero offset. I happened to choose a JT front sprocket for little other reason than that i have used them in the past on many other bikes. I found that the output shaft on the 1998 Monster is longer by the EXACT amount of offset on the JT sprocket. I measured both & found that the Sport shaft is about 2.5-3 thou shorter. However, the Sport shaft i am measuring is so garfed up at the spline, that in itself is likely enough to cause that difference of 2-3 thou (hard to nail down, as the sprocket wobbles a bit with the vernier on it).
The JT sprocket happens to be a 15 tooth & used an 851 as an application when ordering. I pulled the AFAM sprocket of a 996 motor that i have & the offset if much less, so i really did get lucky.
So, If you need a fine spline output shaft, you are no longer locked into a 750 Sport or 91-97 Monster 750 as far as options.
I'm sure there are a ton of other models to cross reference with as well.
