Post subject:  TT2 Rep Road Tyres

Hello, some suggestions on road tyres please.

Rims are from a 696, 4.5 inch rear and 3 inch front,

Tyres at present are Pirelli Diablo Rosso II

150 x 60 R 17 rear
120 x 70 ZR 17 front.

I cant get them to wear at all,,, anywhere, not even in the middle.
So they aren't heating up in my view.
Bike weighs 155kg with 10 litres of fuel. I weigh about 82 kg. My son weighs about 85 / 90 kg.
Warm 750 motor.

Hello Lou,

Started with 36 rear and 34 front
Tried 34 32
Then 30 28
Didn’t seem to make a difference
How low can they go?

Also it doesn’t get hot here, except for a few days a year.
Average in summer is mid 20’s C

Hi Graeme, I had the same problem on a TT2 that I built to do endurance racing. We were running Avon vintage race tires. We won races with the bike, but the tires never seemed to heat up to optimum. An Avon rep told me I could run them as low as 28 psi. I never got around to checking to see if that worked as the bike retired after that race. We have so many racers on the Forum, I was waiting for one of them to respond. I'm far from an expert on this. Can you use tire warmers in your class of racing? Lou

I only go to track days, but there the tire vendors always recommend lower pressure on the rear and higher in the front. You seem to be using pressures the way tires are run on the street. Try 32front/30rear once, and maybe go down from there? MikeV

My son is keen to do some track days but I’m too old and don’t bounce that well anymore.
Road for me.
I’ll try as you suggest higher front pressure

You could try adjusting the pressures according to the pressure rise hot from cold, a rough rule of thumb is approx. 10%. The tires will start to feel sluggish/heavy when you are on the edge of too low. I'd start at 28- 29 and go from there.

Get ahold of your local race tire vendors. I was at a Dunlop tire test a week ago and the big thing is full range of tires for smaller bikes R3, KTM 390, 400 Ninja with rims sizes like yours. Not saying to run slicks but they are the guys to ask. Me I would try to find the lightest ones

Hi Graeme, I’ve always ran the same pressures on my bikes. 32 front/36 rear. That way for me I’m not chasing another suspension problem when it tyre pressures. It’s just a starting point I’ve always stuck with. Boucher.

Hi Graem, the Pirelli diablo rosso is not a tire to go on the track, put the sc1 150/50 supercorsa and 120/70 sc1 pressure should be hot 1.7 bar rear, hot 2.2 bar front.. and you will see that he rubs his ears on the ground :)
