 Post subject: Question about Kokusan ignition

A while back Stelios62 asked about what is needed to install a Kokusan ignition in an engine. Almost any flywheel from all of the 2-valves of the late 80s-90s using carbs will work, but most are very heavy. Shown is one from a 600SS. Igniter boxes are BB1105. The connection from the switch to the ignition wiring is the last version, but that can be cut off and the hot (red) and ground (black) connections added for older wiring. You must be careful to use the R/W wires connection on the H cylinder and the B/Y wires on the V; Red on the right side of the small H connector, and Yellow on the right side of the V connection. If those things get reversed you may get it to start but not to advance the ignition. Setting it up is really just like for Bosch, but the air gap range for the pickups is bigger --- I try for .028" as a middle ground. The Haynes Ducati 2-valve manual has good wiring diagrams, but those can probably be found online for free as images. Not that difficult, but fitting new parts in is seldom a "drop-in". I have been working with Brook Henry of Vee Two developing a new Pantah & Bevel ignition.

Brook has used used every available ignition over the past 40+ years and has downloaded all his tuning experience into an ignition that overcomes all the problems other ignitions have.

Thats good information. Back when I was racing I was really in the dark. I bought my F1 as a several year old worn out racer. Fixed everything I could and a few events later it quit revving. Found a couple extra Kokusan boxes in the spares one marked Bad so put the other on and back in action for a year then another went. Bought a pair of aftermarket from a place in Florida. They didn't work so sent them back for another pair that were supposed to be different. They didn't work either and first race of the season was coming. Well there was a whole Bosch ignition in the spares I was told was crap. Yeah well it ran great and I never had a problem after. Months later I found the boxes I sent back never arrived so I got $1000 in parts I never used. Can't wait to get it on the bench and start over. With a support group no less!

And here is one of the now-scarce A/M aluminum flywheels that will work. They were $200US new. It might be hard to sort out the now-shortened pick-ups wires, but not impossible. MikeV
