As we are new to the 2v Pantah (in fact any Ducati) we are starting to look at stuff for the motor now the frame is coming along nicely. Carrillo rods, Hi-Comp pistons etc...but we are a little stumped with the cams.

I know the ST2/ 900ie cams are a popular choice, but Megacycle do the NCR-07 and another version with more top end. They both have mega duration compared to the ST2 variant though.

The racer in me is screaming buy the race cams rather than cams out of a Sports Tourer, but we arent sure if they will make it too cammy in the 900.

Are there any other race cams available seeing as no one can re-grind these cams (it seems).

Any ideas?

Most use the st cams as the ncr07 are made for long duration wich works well with very big holes and a megaphone at high revs, but not that well with silencers and lower revving 900's is what I think.

NCR-7s WERE the camshaft-of-choice back in the day. However most racing two-valve Ducatis running and racing in the 1980's were of 750cc capacity or less. The combination of Verlicchi 2-into-1 exhaust, as high a compression ratio as you could get, and NCR7's were almost de rigour for racers looking to get the best out of Taglioni's rubberhead bikes. However the ferocious valve overlap meant long hours in the workshop ensuring that the valves (inlet and exhaust) did not tangle, and that a reasonable CR was obtainable without a valve clouting the piston. Not always plain sailing!
Whether NCR7's would work just as well with motors approaching 900cc is difficult to say, but they would surely make 'em rev. The question is just for how many laps.................? ;)

Hello John,

What you need is a combination of valve size, camlift and cam duration.
Look at it from this point of view:
The factory build 900ssie and 1000ds engines.
The 900ssie has 43/38 mm valves, 11,8/11.4 mm lift, 280/274 duration and about 82 bhp.
The 1000ds has about 90cc more, 45/40 mm valves, 11,2/10,8 lift, 260/261 duration and about 85,5 bhp.
So the bigger engine isn't as stronger as it could be.
What you need is bigger valves, high lift, and long duration. That's why modern 2V's have smaller valve angle's about 56 included, the best 2V's engine from the factory at date, is the 696 engine with: 44/40mm valves, cam unknow to me, with 80bhp at 9000rpm.
But with 45mm valve and 40mm exhaust in the 900ss head, more lift and the ncr7 duration the valves will hit each other during overlap time. So that is why you can use ST cams, 11,8/11,4mm lift with 282/281 duration(little better than 900ssie), will be easy to ride.
Even better would be V2-03-210/212 cams with 13mm/11.4mm lift and 265/268 duration, but they might be hard to find these days.
Your dad and you could try and build the 696/1000 head inside the 900 head. like some BOTT racer did in the past, if you start welding for the exhaust at the front, you might as well do it right:

Excellent info...will have to think a little more on this subject, and see if Megacycle do anything else thats not in the catalogue.

Be carefull on the Vee Two V2-212 cams. Vee Two actually made two different version of that cam. The early V2-212 cams (900ss) were also the V2-216 Daytona (750 F1) cams which is a good grind. The later V2-212 cams (900ss) are the same grind as their DS1000 cams on an old style cam shaft and they are way too radical for anything smaller then about 1200cc.

hi there
about the st2 cams, they are great, but the duration is as that long that you can only make the inlet valve 1 mm bigger(44) it is just on the edge if you want to make the exhaust 1 mm bigger (with brand new guides i think it could be ok ,but it can be a risk in the overlap
believe me on my word, we have this cams for 3 years in the TTF1
