Hello all, I have a TT2 replica that uses a '95 750 SS as the doner, it has the brembo 4.5 and 3.5 standard 17 inch wheels. I would like to have a pair of light magnesium wheels but as it's a road bike I can't justify the cost. I saw a front wheel from a 696 monster which felt heaps lighter that the SS wheel. Does anyone have any other ideas? Regards Graeme |

Could never get on with the look of standard three-spoke Brembo's on my SL, so fitted these (picture of front still in the camera) - look almost like Marchesinis, 1kg each lighter, same rim widths, but much cheaper and easily available. Bit of engineering required, but only around spacers and bearing swap. Any good?

Hejira, the rear looks like a Honda 600 wheel? I found a pair of 600 Honda wheels with cut slicks that looked like they were used for super motard but I haven't weighed them. With the discs etc on they don't feel a lot lighter than the SS wheels. but I'm assuming your wheel is Honda? graeme |

Hi Graeme. Yes, the wheels are Honda - ex Fireblade in my case, giving rim sizes of 5.5/3.5. Rears from the 600 are (I think) 5 or even 4.5, depending on year. In terms of weight, posters on another (UK) forum accurately established weights of the old three spokers as 7.2kg rear, 5.1kg front - these Honda ones come out at 6.24 and 4.13. I retained the matching front discs, which with a TI spindle (you just have to don't you!) gave a further 1.1kg saving - the all-up reduction of 3kg is very noticeable and together with the improved looks made the whole exercise well worth it for me. Thanks Jeff, The rims I found (when a fellow down the street was having a clean out) are 4.5 and 3.5 so I will weigh them and see how much lighter they are. These are the same size as the 750 rims. I would like a nice magnesium set such as Steve sells, but I worry about magnesium on rough roads and I'm too poor to justify the expense. I'll also see if I can get a weight on 696 rims. Would be interested to see what the 696 comes in at - worth doing the check, as sometimes the new product is worse (weight-wise) - certainly for the 900's ,the new Brembo front comes out heavier than the old one. For info, I also used a VF500 sprocket carrier, rather than the Fireblade one - lighter and prettier. |
