In the spirit of giving credit to those who make life easy - those who say they can do something - and then do - and do it right - and all the while keeping it simple - then JE Pistons deserves it.

Had this old 80mm piston, made by them decades ago (probably) and asked if they could duplicate but as an 83mm set. Yep. No problem. Done within the time they said. Perfect.

Hey Mike.... How many did you get? I always thought there was a minimum order amount.

I got four. One set for the new project, and one for……the future? Around $600 a set (since someone will ask), counting shipping. That is in the ballpark for what others are asking now for 82mm sets.

They are “identical” specs to the 80mm ones that worked so well (see the carbon pattern) in my 600 TT2 until i destroyed one - the vertical head - of course. They are slightly smoother inside, and have a lighter pin. Nice is that they have cutouts for 41/35mm valves, and a medium-size compression bump that i may notch for the plug nose. The 80s are 400 grams, and these are 425.

I am really pleased, and will call the guy at JE today to tell him so. Service like this is now rare.

I am considering doing the same thing for some 84mm pistons (2mm overbore now allowed) to match the 61.5 crank of the 650 engines (=682cc), which can be used in stock (heavy) Pantazzura framed bikes. But i do not really know if i have that much build time left. They would work well with bigger valves and 900ss cams in a 650 head. Easier to build/assemble than using NCR/Montjuich cams.

The Pistal sets available for 650 Pantahs are only 82mm, with small-valve cutouts, and seem to stress very high compression. The latter means more heat, and race fuel. They are light (360 grams), and are “drop-ins”. Choices always mean compromises of some kind. The missing 30cc would bug someone.

I have rambled enough, but the door is always open. Now i am afraid an AHRMA guy will tell me none of this will be allowed.
