OK boys and girls, May 20th will be another get together at my shop. It is a Saturday and Reno Leoni will be making his yearly trip to my cave. Everyone is invited. Bring a bike, a fancy car or just you. Bagels and coffee in the AM, pizza in the afternoon, pastry for the evening. Hoping to get some special bikes this time. 9:00 AM till ? I'm picking up Ralph's Cagiva 500 GP bike and his recently re-aquired Dale Newton TT1! Ralph will be away the 20th but wanted us all to be able to see some of his special bikes. Thank you Ralph! This alone should get you guys going. Lou

Yes Chris and thanks Carlo! You guys are always in my shop in spirit! Picked up the Cagiva GP bike and the TT1 this morning and I will tell you guys they look amazing! I am very lucky as I get to see these nice bikes often, but I never take it for granted. I always get a real charge out of them. Hope some of you get to come to the shop and enjoy them. Sharing these bikes is our duty and privilege. Lou

Lou, could you please refresh the memory of those of us on here with terminal CRS on the history of the Dale Newton bike? Is it one of the two he brought to Loudon one year with John Williams up? I can still see those beauties sitting in the pits close enough to reach out and touch.
Bill

I'll answer the easy one first. Yes Bill, that is one of those bikes. For people that don't know, Dale Newton was a tuner on the west coast of the states. He originally had a TT2 that John Williams raced and then they were able to get a factory Ducati TT1. It is the bike in the Cycle magazine articles. 'Messinger in red' was the TT2. I will enclose some pictures of the TT1. It's in a lot of Ducati books. Now for my buddy Paul, who I knew would ask about that strange frame. I bought a used Pantah motor on eBay from a gentleman in Pennsylvania. I went to pick up the motor and was hoping the guy had other stuff. He did. he had a garage full of bikes and parts. A lot of Japanese and English bike stuff and a bunch of Ducati singles parts. Not exactly what I was hoping for. So as I was getting ready to leave he asked me if I could identify a part for him, I said 'sure' if I can. He pulls out the rusty TT frame you see on the white table! I laughed out loud, he said 'why are you laughing' I say because that was what I was hoping to find when I came out here! We talked for a while and he asked if I could look at another part, 'sure' I said again. Then he pulls out the frame on the dolly. At a glance I thought it was an Egli then I realized it was something else. I knew right away it was for a pantah motor, but it wasn't a finished product. Close, but no shock mount. He had bought a collection of parts from a shop on the west coast. Sonny Angel was the owner. They sold Ducati, Guzzi, Norton, Yamaha. Sonny was a legend at his shop for many years. Raced the Isle, built bikes and was an all around good guy from what I had read. He said he thought that Sonny had built the frame but had no proof. I liked it regardless of origin and said I would take it. Trust me it was cheap enough as I figured at best it would be wall art! It still may be, but when I got home I immediately jumped on the internet and did some research. I will enclose the pictures I found after a few hours of internet search of Sonny Angel. It is a very light weight bronze welded frame. I think it would be fun to finish, at least make it a roller. You will all see what happens. As you know I can be very fast or very slow at building bikes! Oh and the TT frame has very light surface rust, but I couldn't leave her there to rot. So now she's home with me as well. Lou

Cool! So it must also be the one that was in my second most favorite "Cycle" article, "Desmo-Ships On A Time Belt" from April 1985, which included my all time most favorite "Cycle" photo, which showed it back to back with the Red and Silver Pile looking down pit out at Willow Springs. That article ended with what is probably my favorite Phil Shilling quote: "I hear this song in my ear, but I can't quite sing it".

The current paint scheme on the tail was throwing me off. Somewhere I have a snapshot of the two TT's in the pits at Loudon. I need to find that.
