Post subject:  14-16 of July for AHRMA event at NJMP.

As Bill (Pantah good) just reminded me to post! We will be at NJ motorsports Park for the AHRMA event July 14th to the 16th. Not a Symposium, but a chance to see about having a full fledged one next year at this location during this event. We will bring some bikes and have a casual display, and see if we can drum up some interest for next year. What we are trying to do is have a Symposium next year to celebrate the Pat Slinn/Tony Rutter accomplishments. I am trying to build an accurate replica of Pat's old TT2 and Mike V will try and bring his 1st year Pantah Replica of Pat's handy work. With any luck we can pull it off and have a special time. As aways everyone is invited this year and next. Start thinking about it, and any input is always appreciated. If someone want's to bring Pat's original bike and save me the work that would be fine as well! Lou

I briefly talked to Cranky and Lou yesterday at supper time, and everything was reported going well. Friday was very wet, but yesterday was dry and today is looking good too. They didn't say if the Rutter bike showed. Good luck today gentlemens.

I think the the most important sentence from Nicks' excellent article is: "Saif and his gang are petitioning AHRMA to add a class that will accommodate these legendary racers...". It is a crime that our Pantah based racers don't fit properly into an existing AHRMA vintage road race class. If anyone on here agrees, help petition AHRMA by sending an email to Cindy Cowell, the National Roadrace Director, at ccowell@ahrma.org which might just help remedy that. Cindy and Andrew Cowell are really good people, who have devoted themselves to promoting vintage AHRMA road racing, and I know they were impressed with our show a few years back at Barber. And who knows, maybe before too long we might want to have another big symposium at Barber with our TT/F1/Panthah brothers and sisters from all around the world, attending and really RACING!! Please, let her know how you feel.

I remember going through the AHRMA rule a number of years ago, and found it strange that my 25-year old F1 did not seem to fit in any class at that time. But then I saw an ahrma class for modern superbikes racing at Barber in 2011. Yes, I did see that Palmer and another rider found a place for their F1s in some class that same weekend, and I think there was one TT replica in there with them. And Ed Milich has raced his Pantah for years in ahrma, with some success too. Then, Darmah Dave told me he had to use all stock bodywork to race his Pantah with them. Confusing. It would seem that the TTs and Pantahs with old-style fairings and bodyworks would fit in somewhere.

Is it just that they are forced into classes that somehow leave them uncompetitive?

Yes. You have to study the current handbook or rule book. http://www.ahrma.org/ahrma_pdfs/Z-2017/Forms/17_Handbook_web.pdf. Robbie won the now defunct BOT3 championship on my old 750 Harris TT. That was a "modern" class which included SV650's and the like, but at least we fit in displacement wise. Now a TT or a 750F1 could only enter Next Gen Superbike (which includes Ducati 888's, etc), or Battle Of Twins (unlimited-displacement air-cooled modern twins), or Sound Of Thunder 3 (includes OHC two- or three-valve modern twins to 805cc). Darmah Dave and Ed Milich run their Pantahs in Middleweight Vintage Superbike which has a 1982 model year cut-off, and is pretty strictly a production class. Most AHRMA "vintage" classes only go up to the mid 1970's. What we need for our aging middleweight race bikes like TT's, 750F1's and Honda Hawk GT / NT650's is something like the existing Next Gen Superbike class with its production year cut-off dates, but with a smaller displacement limit class of something around 750cc's.

I just received a somewhat encouraging reply from my email to AHRMA about this issue. Note - an official form for submitting a proposal for a rule change is on page 117 of the AHRMA Handbook. Must be submitted only by an AHRMA member in good standing (along with other rules and deadline for the next year). An associate membership is $40. Here's the reply from Carl Anderson (Vintage Roadrace Rules & Eligibility main contact):

Hi William,
The transition to allowing 1980’s machines in AHRMA roadracing is one that continues to get more interest. The Superbikes were offered first because AHRMA has a purpose to educate people about racing history, and there is a lot of history around those machines.
But we can and will include others from the period. Classes are added by a defined process from members formally submitting written proposals. At this point in time, AHRMA’s schedule is so full that, in order to add another period of vintage classes, some classes for modern machines will have to be dropped to make room. It won’t be popular with those who enjoy running those, but a certain amount of trimming may be essential.
I would encourage potential racers of 80’s machines to contact AHRMA officials and talk about possible rule proposals for next year.

It would seem that the word "vintage" should be a moving target that changes now and then. The date 1982 splits the time of the pantahs in half. That year doesn't ring significant to me.

Seems like vintage should now end around the late 80s, or somewhere near the beginning of the "superbike" era of the very early 1990s --- when rising rate suspensions were more common, and fuel injection and CPUs started controlling the engines. How can most carbed bikes compete with the latter?

Some day they wiil need a class for the era starting with all the new electronic engine/suspension controls. How wiil the early Superbikes without that run with them?

Started around 1986 or 88? Seems like five years could easily be added to the "classic" era.
