I have a stock of sight glasses made by the original manufacturers which will fit the 35mm sight ports on our Pantah based engines. Unlike the OE, which are two piece, these are one piece moldings in clear material. The oil window has the "star" shaped backing piece in silver with makers name & centre level dot. I've replaced my opaque originals with these items & they look & work great on my trackday F2 style pantah & Verlicchi 750. Either search UK ebay for "Ducati sight glass" or contact me through the forum. Cheers Mike.

Hi Mike,
I think you're talking about sight gauge shown in the link below. If so, I just want to pass along my experience with one. About four years ago I had to replace an original one on my race TT that had a couple cracks in the lens, and was seeping a little oil. I got a couple of those clear plastic one piece ones from Elesa, because it was the only one with the correct thread. After the engine got good and hot on the track, I checked it to be sure it was tight and found it had gotten noticeably soft from the heat. Needless to say it came right out and into the trash. As I recall, I then switched the cracked original one to the timing side and used the timing one as the oil window. The specs say these are good for 230F, but I don't think that's a high enough temperature for a track bike. Maybe ok for a street bike, but I don't think I'd want the thought of that oil window maybe getting all soft in the back of my mind. I know coming up with those Pantah sight gauges is a real problem, and I don't mean to sound too alarmist about these, just wanted to pass along my experience with one under racing conditions

Just in case someone is looking for one of the originals, I saw this on eBay.

I can't argue with your experience of racing temps being somewhat higher than street cruisers might attain but if you can boil water on the crankcases after a race I'd be a little worried about the engines longevity!

Maybe its an ambient temp difference that produces the high case temp? Here in the UK they still run hot (esp on the dyno) but I've never seen anywhere near 200F on the cases using a digi pyrometer.

Elesa still do the original 2 piece black/clear glasses but for some reason no longer in metric threads. They are continuously rated at 210F rather than the 230F of the one piece glasses I've been using for the past two seasons with no concerns. There are metal bodied versions with crystal lenses - quite expensive but rated at 350F which should be ideal for anyone considering endurance racing in Death Valley. :)

Cheers
Mike

Oil peak temps on these air cooled engines can be 250F range. Thats not to say that the sight glass is receiving that temp input in its location. Being plastic if it did see that temp it would go bad quickly. Pantah-good,s experienc was in the heat of the midwestern summer under battle conditions. Note that the later pantah (sport) windows got away from the threaded design. They went with a push in rubber seal supporting the glass like a "modern" cycle. This rubber design has no isuue with Temp so maybe its a combination of Chemicals (oil) and temp?
