Post subject:  F1 Laguna Seca correct tyres?

Having just purchased a F1 Laguna Seca, I am just finding my way around it... looking at another thread on here viewtopic.php?f=23&t=10624 I have noticed the tyre size is different to what is fitted to my LS?
The Tyres currently fitted are:
Front: AVON AZARO 130/70/16
Rear: ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, 150/80ZR16
The bike seems OK with these tyres (Sizes) but I am guessing that they are a old tyre and I am thinking of replacing them sometime soon. Golden Tyres?
Any advice really appreciated.
Thanks
Steve

You could consider Pirelli Sport Demon tires. They are available in 16 inches diameter. I have installed a set on my F1. They provide a very good grip for the road. But, they are not made for the track. I tell you this just in case you would like to participate in track days with this bike.

those azaros are the closest radials to the original that were available prior to the golden tyre/shinko becoming available.

pirelli sport demon are bias ply tyres, not radials.

This is topical for me as I've just fitted Golden Tyres to my Montjuich which is basically same as your Laguna Seca. From new its been fitted with Michelin Hi Sport 160/80-16 + 120/80-16 (130/70-16 for the last set). These were the nearest available equivalent in 1986 to its original Michelin racing 18/67-16 + 12/60-16 and are the size that, I guess, would have been fitted to your Laguna Seca when new. After years of struggling to find old stock Hi-Sports in good condition I had to admit defeat and resort to buying a set of Golden Tyres. In my case fitted sizes are as follows:
(R)Golden Tyre 160/60-16 = 594mm dia. and 155mm wide
(R)Hi Sport 160/80-16 = 633mm dia. and 165mm wide
(F)Golden Tyre 130/60-16 = 562mm dia. and 130mm wide
(F)Hi Sport 130/70-16 = 580mm dia. and 130mm wide
My initial impression of the Golden Tyres was that they appeared well constructed and balanced-up nicely with not much weights required. On the downside, they look a bit "weedy" when fitted but was able to address this, at the front at least, by dropping my mudguard to its lower position. Your forks/guard look slightly different so not sure you can do the same. The gear ratio's have obviously changed quite a bit and the bike now feels undergeared and I would have to go from 15/40 to about 15/38 on the sprockets. The big gain for me has been to the handling at lower speeds. The bike has always felt a bit unpredictable at lower speeds on the Hi Sports with a definite reluctance to turn in and then hold its line. Only when pushed has the handling come alive. Now it feels much better at lower speeds - in fact much more planted. Some of this may be that I've got used to riding on old tyres but I seem to remember the intimidating handling even when the Hi Sports were fresh. In view of the fact that you don't have many choices if you want factory fresh, sports tyres I would recommend these tyres!
