Steve,
Exhaust can looks good. Does it mount up the same as the one that was on the bike, just bigger in diameter and longer?
As for the bad sound from the motor, have you checked the compression. Are you running any air cleaners? Be sure to check the bearings on the belt tensioners and the Throttle Valve Assemblies on the Keihin FCR carbs.

Gary - The can essentially mounts-up the same and with the results from Calabogie's sound check, it can be redone without the taper down to 2" in the perf core. With the taper, torque went up and power down. 3" straight through with that volume and length, noise should be OK and hopefully performance back where it should be.

Rob and I ran the bike last night in the shop and I went around with the stethoscope listening for a source - sounds like the pistons. Dropped the oil and it looked like it had had come out of an old Buick with 30 or 40,000 on the same oil change. No metal to speak of in the pre-filter or on the magnetic plug, but lots of what is likely very fine aluminum in suspension. Everything looks fine under the rocker covers. I'm going to pull the alt cover this evening and then the front head and cylinder. Still a mystery..

Pic shows nice red oil that went in and Buick oil that came out.

Steve,

What's the red oil? Did you check compression?

It's Maraschino cherry juice. ...I thought all the fast guys used it.

Amsoil 15w50 Synth - but it actually smells kinda cherry-like.

Any clues to the cause of the engine noise and black stuff that came out of the sump yet?

Hi Graeme,

Steve shipped the motor back to me, hope to see it this week.

Detonation.

While we were at Mosport, Bar mentioned that he had a can of C12 lying around that he wasn’t going to use; adding that in a sealed container the shelf life was almost unlimited. It was mine for the asking and he asked his wife to bring it over to the track on Sunday. In the interim, I bought some C12 at the track, so it wasn’t until the last session at Mosport that I started into Bar’s gas – which I then used in the Yellow Bike at the Calabogie SSR event.

And learned an expensive lesson in race fuel shelf life.

When Gary got into to the engine, he discovered evidence of detonation on the piston squish areas and in the top of the cylinders. The vertical cylinder wrist pin was broken and the piston cracked. The horizontal pin and bush damaged and the mains showing evidence of a pretty severe hammering. Had I not been running the WhisperJet Mk II muffler, the failure would have gone unnoticed and the results catastrophic, so I guess I’m going to count myself lucky with the damage incurred.

With 13.4:1 compression and a pretty tight-to-the-limit squish, the motor required 110 octane to stay safe and we’d unknowingly gone down to 108 just switching to C12 and to God-knows-what with the five year old C12 that Bar gave me. Add track temperatures in the mid-90s F and you get hammered wrist pins and mains.

Remarkably with all these years hurtling around tracks on loud, fast Italian (and other) bikes, I’ve managed to avoid having to deal with ultra-high compression motors and race gas - and just wandered into a situation where I wasn’t fully cognoscente of my surroundings and the rules of the game. So, now I know much more than I did about the shelf life of race gas in plastic containers (measured in months, not years) and have firsthand knowledge when it comes to the dangers of detonation.

Gary’s going to put the motor back together with a more civilized compression ratio and to gain back some of the spice, the displacement will go up to 840cc. Kudos to him for dropping everything and jumping on the rebuild so I have a chance of making the Grattan SSR event.

Pics of the carnage later courtesy of Gary..

Steve, go and buy a lottery ticket !
You are very lucky you motor didn't end up as scrap, and you on the ground.
I would like to know what will be done to increase it to 840cc ?

Hi Graeme,

We are going from an 88mm pistons to a 90mm pistons with a 64mm stroke.

One of the nicest guys in this ' hobby' is Gary Palmer! Always willing to help, and is always willing to share his vast knowledge of things Pantah. Lou
