it may just be worn needles and atomisers.

Will be an easy thing to change the atomisers and needles, took the pump levers out today and synchronized the carbs as well as possible then gave it a go, seemed to backfire and carry on a bit more than previously, It seems to idle OK, just on acceleration,
I'll put the strobe on the ignition tomorrow and make sure it's advancing.

did a compression check today and both topped out at 170PSI, put in a new set of plugs and it runs and idles beautifully. I have ordered a 4 stroke leak down tester for the future. Will take it for a ride and see what difference the loss of pump jet makes.

DJ, sorry for the delay.
Main 145
Idle 60
Atom AB265
Slide 60/1
Needle K4 middle knotch
98 unleaded, no pumps.

(750, compression is up, heads flowed, 900ie cams, K&N type filters, open pipe, )

Runs and idles very smoothly.

Hope this helps.

Also,,,,

Be aware of the newer black top 40's with the white floats.
The floats can stick down when the carbs get hot when you stop and flood fuel all over the place.
The 2 "pegs" that the float axle goes through seem to expand and squeeze the float till it can't move.
You can file the end of the float "tube" (that the axle goes through) to give it a little more clearance. No more potential Roman Candle!
My rear did this first then the front a month later.

Hi Graeme,
Thanks for having a look so quickly much appreciated. Mine is not far away from your set up then apart from idle jet and mains, have taken the pumps off and took it for a ride yesterday the difference was amazing idles well (with new plugs) and responds to the throttle well. I checked the plugs when I got home and while still black the electrode end was clean so is a step in the right direction.
My carbs are the black top 40mm ones, so will definitely look at giving the float pivot some more room. Do you have the part number for the K&N filters used as mine has the open mesh bell mouths and would prefer filters.

cheers

Actually DNA filters, K&N were too expensive and hard to get at the time.
SERCO are the agent. 07 3823 3833
OV-5100 was the p/n
In '08 they were $38.49 each

Try 95 octane. Australian 98 engineered for fuel injection and questionable at best. Float levels impossible to set with 98.

Hi Burger,
In Brisneyland caltex and BP 98 work ok but not shell.
I know the fuel in Australia is different in most states.
