Post subject:  Exhaust gasket question

I've got my exhaust off and the gaskets and notice that as-compressed, the ID of the gasket is quite a bit smaller than the port ID and the header pipe ID. Seems like a bad place to have a wall sticking into the exhaust flow. I measure the ID of the gasket at 31.5mm. This normal? Is there a simple, better solution?

It's a flexitallic style, so just opening up the ID will probably just promote the gasket falling apart.

Thanks,

Geof

Hello Geoff, I was a little surprised to find that my exhaust port to pipe did not flow as it should, so I searched on the net for some gaskets which crushed to the correct diameter.

(they were shite, and disintegrated so I bought some more from another supplier.)

Of course, restriction is negative but nothing less than a gas-tight seal is acceptable in any case.

That gasket seems to be in every Pantah gasket set, from the original 500cc. Yes, even the F1s seem to have it. One solution is to use 900ss exhaust gaskets, closer to 42mm ID. MikeV

Yes use the 900 gaskets and for big motors with big ports use Guzzi gasket 90718406. Will need to be lightly trimmed on the OD.
