Hi Guys
The resto of the F1 is now well and truly in progress. Bike came apart reasonably easy once I worked out how to access the bolts holding the swing arm pin in - ended up making up a special hex head bit to fit the space. Am now into cleaning mode - surprisingly most of the external rubber pieces are in good condition and are coming up well after a degrease, wash and silicone spray treatment. Engine is off with the builder - as feared front piston is stuck in the bore. He is giving it a good soak to hopefully dismantle with minimal damage but I fear either a new barrel or a relining of the bore will be required. I am looking at the ones on eBay at the moment just in case. He'll make up a new set of pistons and rings for the bike while I get the cases painted. Carbies have been salvaged and rebuild of the two units is nearly finished, was happy could save them as originally looked bad. Only disaster so far is breaking a bit of off the lip of outer fork tube while trying to remove a stuck fork seal. It is repairable and will not effect the seal sealing.

Now a couple of questions if I may as there are a couple of things I'd like to confirm before spending up:

Front brake calipers Brembo F08?
Rear brake calipers Brembo F05?
Right and left master cylinders are Brembo PS15?
Fork seal inside diameter is 40mm for 85 not 38mm like the 86?
Is there anything special about the head bearings and races on the 85? I ask as everything for sale is 86 on.

Thanks in advance

Hi Pkay, pictures would help a bit as far as identification is concerned, but I will give this a shot. Both 85 and 86 had F08 calipers in the front and an F05 in the rear. The 85 had 38mm fork seals, the sliders were red in color, and were Marzocchi, the later F1's were silver in color, Forcelle Italia and were 40mm. The head stock bearings are the same as many Ducati twins, even modern ones. Hope this helps. Good luck with the project. Lou

I now have my rechromed forks back and yes they are 38mm. I also have my recovered seat back and it has been reunited with the rear fairing. It's exciting when things start to come back together.

I've added a photo of the damage I did to the fork outer getting the seal out. I didn't notice the small crack when I was dismantling the fork. It will weld up OK I have been told prior to paint.

.

Otherwise the bike is in bits. The exhaust was damaged but I have had it re-welded. The nikasil lining of the front cylinder had come away and was junk. I have sourced a new barrel but it wasn't cheap!

I'll take some pictures of the ruined head and the new seat over the next couple of days. Next up is to go through the loom and fix. The engine has been dismantled and getting ready to go to painters. Have my long list of parts to buy from various places. And the frame and wheels are off being painted as we speak.

After the new barrel arrived it was clear it was different material to the original item. Given I don't want to have two barrels of different material on the bike I am now reverting to getting the old barrel relined. I've found a local operator who specialises in this type of activity. Guess I'll put the spare on the shelf for a rainy day (or a future shed clean out........).

Hi Beas, that looks like a pretty sweet F1! Those Marvic wheels? Those brakes are awesome! I would love to find a set of those. More pics please. Lou
