For my (personally) I think it's a extra complication, another variable. Too costly to experiment (on my age) and too costly when I put down one of the bikes due to in-experience. Sliding a Ducati into a turn will probably never be my thing.
IIRC the first time Doohan used it after his foot was mangled and unable to bend or brake.

Nojapanbike....thanx for response on the disc brakes.

Ducadini......on the other piece on the thumb brake use.....the picture is on an SOS bike (TZ with XR650 single). I heard that some of the go fast guyz in this class use these instead of foot pedals because the big 4 stroke singles engine brake so hard. Not sure how accurate that is??

One of those (Laverda Twin 860) had a aluminium rear disc (just alu, no sprayed Zanzani) because He didn't use it anyway but TechControl demanded it.
I don't recall even touching mine (except when standing still on a ramp), the front was good enough to flip the bike (and did it twice) so I saw no use for the rear brake. Sliding into corners dirttrack-style wasn't discovered (yet) or at least not done in BoTT in the 80's.
Sliding the bike going out was fun, sliding the bike going down was costly.
I guess You'll just have to fit one on Your favorite bike and try it.

With a single disc and a fourpiston up front (with extra cooling), they probably ran into a cold brake to start with. Maybe that's why they fitted the small caliper behind the leg.
Our Kymco (shopping scooter) has three pistons up front : two are connected to the front brake, one is coupled with the rear. Really surprised me when on a wet road I was braking hard, ran out of road, and braked with the "rear" also. Promptly went down with a locked front.
Never trusted the MotoGuzzi setup also.
