My new F1 (Gary Palmer's old bike) is on the lift and I've started into the process of making it mine without adding any weight to the machine. Adding the charging system and removing the muffler had a net gain of 1.2lbs and I still have to float the rear brake, swap to clip-ons with risers and go to a full F1 fairing upper - so I'm looking at titanium fasteners to balance things out. I've hit the obvious suppliers: Pro-bolt, Corsa Meccanica, Baller, and Race Bolts. Yesterday, I discovered Toronto Cycles (who cater to the bicycle crowd) and offer some pretty good prices.. Is there anyone else I should be looking at? |

. . . nice list of supplyers ! Titanium bolts on my bike is on my "to do" list but I always wondered are they just as strong as the steel 10.9 and 12.9 bolts whitch you use on brake calipers or on the bolts that clamp both yokes ? How can you find out what the strenght rate is on a titanium bolt, is it stamped on the serface just like steel bolts ? I am a little worried that a supplyer tells you a differnt story than it actual is . . . . in regards to the safety of you and the bike you have to know sure, don't you ? André |

I know Fred at Yoyodyne really well, but I took a quick look at his pricing and moved on... |

André Hey, Andre: As long as you're buying Grade 5 from someone reputable, you're getting stuff that's up to the task. Of course anyone can say it's Grade 5 - which is where the reputable supplier comes in. From Wikipedia: Grade 5, also known as Ti6Al4V, Ti-6Al-4V or Ti 6-4, is the most commonly used alloy. It has a chemical composition of 6% aluminium, 4% vanadium, 0.25% (maximum) iron, 0.2% (maximum) oxygen, and the remainder titanium.[3] Grade 5 is used extensively in Aerospace, Medical, Marine, and Chemical Processing.[4] It is used for connecting rods in ICEs. It is significantly stronger than commercially pure titanium while having the same stiffness and thermal properties.[5] Among its many advantages, it is heat treatable. This grade is an excellent combination of strength, corrosion resistance, weld and fabricability. In consequence, its uses are numerous such as for military aircraft or turbines. It is also used in surgical implants.[3] Generally, it is used in applications up to 400 degrees Celsius. Its properties are very similar to those of the 300 stainless steel series, especially 316. |
