Hello everybody

As title say:
Floating brake disk already exist on motorbike in 1983.?
I ask because i belive your experience on motorbike could solve this
Do you have any evidence of Pantah frame bike or TT bike with floating brake disc on 1983 or before?
I'm asking this to clarify a doubt I have concerning vintage rules on my racing categories.

Do a Pantah in 1983 was equipped with brake disk like this?

Thank you in advance
Ciao

Hi Filippo,

I know that the first ever twin piston calipers were introduced by Brembo & Honda around the same time. 1983 is the earliest evidence I have unearthed.

This may answer your question if my theory is correct - a dual piston caliper has a more narrow foot print - more shallow disc profile (note I am talking out my ass currently :-) ) This narrow disc profile may have lead to the disc overheating and warping that may not have been an issue on earlier brakes.

With that in mind it might be difficult to find a machine of that vintage with floating discs?

If Eddie Lawson's first 500cc Grand Prix World Championship Yamaha (about 83 or 4) with Brembo P43D dual piston calipers didn't have floating disks (same as on the 1986 Ducati Montjuich) then it is a definite No to your question.

(I must say, that was a mighty fine piece of BS I just wrote! Most of it will hold water!)

Hi Athleticroman and thank you for replying.
If I well understand the meaning of "holding water" then I can say "I'm climbing on glases" :)

Your point is wery strong and i belive, right.

But I want to change category and go on the more competitive TT500 this year. And I wish to hold my floating brake disc with me
I know on this category rules accept brake disc but they need to be " stock or historically compatible".
So what is "historically conpatible"?
(I hope to have translate the rules in the right meaning).

But If floating disc did not exist on 1983 I give up.
Ciao
Filippo

You may need to purchase a few Ducati history books with photos and yearly descriptions of the models. Falloon, Cathcart, Pullen, Walker, Motoclissmo, etc. And there must be hundreds of photos of the Ducati TTs and Pantahs of the era from as early as 1980.

The replica I finished last is of the 1980 Ducati factory Pantah racer, and there are four photos of the originals at the front of the postings.

Good luck with the techies.
MikeV

PS: The last of the four photos has, I believe, Zanzani aluminum floating discs. 1980.

Hi MikeV
Thank you
On your front page of your "Pantah racer 1980 circa" there is a Pantah with "float looking disk brake "
I follow your suggestion and check on the Ducati history by Motociclismo:

The TT2 on the pics get floating brake discs.
But this pics came for 81/82?

Yes, that is one of the earliest TT2s, with the 18 front wheel. 1981. MikeV

Of course they had them : one of the first four factory TT2's ( and I mean the Italian TT2 class) had a set of floaters up front.

I got the Brembo info on those at the 1982 Koln IFMA.
Not really sure but I think Zanzani went aluminium plasmacoated floaters in 1983.
And on the 1981 Calendar there are also a few pics.

For reference: ISR made their first full floating discs in 1978. They had then seen the Zanzanis (maybe in 1976) and were a bit sceptic about the design; though that the ”loose” rotors would affect the pistons in the calipers. This was not as bad as they feared.

ISR:s first four piston caliper in cast magnesium was produced in 1976. When the rider came to the GP in Italy they asked ”qui quattro pistone”. I guessed the learned...
First billet caliper was produced in 1983 and the six piston caliper in 1989.

Sorry for the bad quality image.

/Björn

Hi Filippo!

It is a 120/80-16 tire on a 3,5 inch rim. Too wide rim for that tire, but I think also the photo got a bit ”disturbed”. I have the same ISR magnesium wheels for my F1, with magnesium brake disc centers and billet calipers. I use the Avon 120/70 tire that is made for the 3,5 inch rim.
