I hate to admit this, but I resorted to sand blasting first, since more gentle methods did not work. That left it a bit rough, so then I used the soda blaster too smooth it and make it brighter. It is acceptable now, but next time I may use some other method, and am open to suggestions. If there are no bearings in the case all methods are open; if you are trying to protect some good ones (yes, I think many are still good, in spite of what some might say) then there are some limits. Shipping cylinders and heads for any reason is always risky because of the delicate fins, especially on the horizontal parts, so I am against sending them to someone for a service like this. The side covers are the factory smooth type, and they have not even been cleaned properly yet.

It has been about seven years since I built something new, so just doing these things again is one learning process after another. Fun but frustrating at times. For instance, I took the frame to a hot-rod guy who advertised dipping whole car bodies and other large parts to remove paint and rust, but he said he could not dip the Pantah frame; he was afraid of hidden holes keeping chemicals inside the frame tubes. Same thing on the swingarm, even though the big hole goes all he way around. Then he said he could not dip the Dymags, because they were magnesium, but the site never mentioned that metal as being a problem on its list; he said he was going to add it. Removing the paint and powdercoat from the engine and the frame (have you ever looked at a Pantah frame close?) has been very time-consuming---and not fun! MikeV

Addenda 5: Finally got back the modified Yamaha RD 400 rotors, and I am very happy with them; a pretty good rendition of the 260mm Lockheed drilled and slotted versions that were used. NOW it should be on the ground this week. Also found a WBO-made Pantah aluminum tank that Mr Slinn confirms as a better replica of the orginal, including the fuel filler and the overall dimensions; switching mid-stream. A few more progress photos: Got the rebuilt Lectrons back and they give me much more confidence that it will start and run. Now to cut out those fancy-smancy gothic front caliper adapters---that will take a few hours with my limited tools and experience. Starting to look more and more like No. 8, and things are going together well, but still so many little things to do.

Addenda 6: Finally got a rolling bike on the ground this weekend. Fairing fitted up good; survived the fitting of the delicate brittle race windscreen (still staring at the one bolt needed in the middle, where no screen ever seems to fit a fairing well); dash board complete; all brake lines ready; rear end complete except for chain; and the list of nuts and bolts to check continues to grow. This week I learn how to paint---no problem---right? Next week I remember how to wire (hint, Lou), and also put the remaining parts on the sides of the engine together. I'm tired. The site finally let me add photos. September 19: I got those odd caliper adapters made with a plasma cutter, a dremel tool, files, drills, and sandpaper; they fit, and now I have operating brakes front and rear!

Looks great Mike, keep it going. I'm exhausted as well but it will all be worth it when we all get to Barbers. Can't wait for Pat to sign your tank! At least you have a roller, I still have one bike almost ready for assembly and another about half done. Red/silver bike is almost finished as well. Will try to post some of my notoriously poor photos tomorrow. Man we are getting close! Lou

These photos are a few weeks old so they are further along I guess! The bike with the primered frame is apart and the frame and fairings should be done by the end of next week. Then it's build a TT in a week! Lou
