Well, I am working on my rendition of a tribute (I will not call it a replica, and Mr. Slinn would spot any discrepancies anyway) to the Tony Rutter/Pat Slinn/Steve Wynne Pantah racer No. 8 that was a winner at the Isle of Man. I hope to be at Barber in October with this in good running condition; we will see. Have been piling up parts as close to what it had, and what it looked like, based on the photos available, a magazine article of that time, and some help from Pat Slinn that has been posted here. Spent this weekend cutting and fitting tubing for the first time; and I will try my hand at some TIG welding soon. The heads are out for conversion to race cams and porting, and the crank, rods, and pistons should be back from balancing soon. Well, here we go (more to come later): Attachment: Attachment: Attachment: Attachment: Attachment: Attachment: Attachment: Attachment:

Yes, very similar. I am cheating on the front vertical rail though. I have your photos (the complete collection, from eBay) too. Thanks, MikeV |

Addenda 2: Finished the last three new tubes, and cut the corners off the axle sliders. These tubes took half the time the first set. Used a hack saw and a ROTO Zip grinder set to 20,000 RPM with grinding wheels marked "do not exceed 2500 RPM"; no shrapnel so far. Took about two hours on the axle sliders with a hack saw and file. I lost three pounds and the bike might have lost three ounces; soon I will be drilling washers like Steve Munro does. The crank will get here next week, so I can start on the lower end of the engine next. The lightened, balanced, polished crank got here today; now this is serious weight loss! And here is the frame welded up and ready to be cleaned for painting. Found out I could weld last weekend. Attachment: Attachment: Attachment: Attachment: Attachment: Attachment: Attachment:

Nice! I like your Ohlins box too. I've got a similar one that must be 15 years old now, and I keep it around just for jobs like the way yours is being used. Nothing props up something else with as much style as an old Ohlins box. Bill |

Addenda 3: Got the bottom end together, and all is well. The ported heads, now with 35 and 41mm valves, arrived and they will be attached next. This is where I start to get excited. The heads went well, including twisting and re-welding the front manifold so that carb will clear. Finally got the nerve to take out the hack saw and bend the exhaust upward as on the original No. 8. Welding this thin stuff was a good humility lesson though; just when I thought I could weld---but it all worked out. I think the seat looks fine too, but have to extend it some in the front. Here are some of the lightened parts too. MikeV Attachment: Attachment: Attachment: Attachment: Attachment: Attachment:

Addenda 4: Well, the bottom end went together just fine; tight where it should be, loose where it can be. Good on valve-to-valve and valve-to-piston clearances too. Now it is time to tweak (degree) the cams. Now we call this phase "Prime Time", or "send them to the rack". This should be sitting on the engine, with a rolling suspension next week. Frame on the engine now. The forks turned out nice; new tubes, seals, oil, and the insides looked really good. Aug 13, AM; still waiting for the machinist to modify the brake rotors --- always "soon". Attachment: Attachment: Attachment: Attachment: Attachment: Attachment: Attachment: Attachment:

Looking real good 618F1. Your building one of my dream bikes! What was the starting point for your motor, ie black cases and heads? |

Yes, the case, crankshaft, and heads are 1985 Cagiva. I have only one 1981 aluminum 500 Pantah case, trans, and heads, and I am saving those for a factory race replica later. Getting the paint off the black engine was very time-consuming; paint remover does not work, and a soda blaster does not work. The cylinders are the newer 600 parts bored to 82mm, turned down to fit the case, with the more-current cam belt rollers and adjusters; you have to fiddle around with the O-rings and the locating and oil-supply dowels, but they work just fine. |
