Post subject: | Finding the right footpeg position
The next step was to start thinking about the foorrests. On the original drawing i designed the footpegs in the position that took no notice of the new tank and was my standaard lenght of 82 cm from the clip-ons. This always works priddy good with my height of 172cm. Then we started to get some doubts about my plans. Looking for the right footpeg position i made some pictures from our bike collection to compare them. We took a lot of measurements, because the new classic pantah tank is a little longer compared to our modern bikes we thought long and hard about it: Then we tackweld two in the position we thought would be right and took another picture. Compare the riding position and let me know what you think of it? Next step will be making the mould for the footpeg and rear suspension position. Have already a nice idea how to do that. I will work on that today and make some pictures.

the mono and the supertwin are very much alike, although the ducati has a longer reach to the bars, the little guzzi is seated a little lower due to the flat buddyseat. Our new baby is a little harder to judge, because without seat or padding the legs look more cramped than they are actually going to end up. if you take that into account, i'd say we are pretty close, and we could always win some room by angling the clipons outward a few degrees, although that is probably very historically incorrect looking at these photos also makes me think about fuel cap position on some of our projects. |

Post subject: | The rear suspension
For the rear swingarm we decided to use a standaard pantah one as a starting point. So when we started to build the rear suspionsion we put the swingarm at the right angle and height from the ground. We had the bottom point on the swingarm and we had the top coordinates from the work i did on the laptop with the suspension kinematics software. So we fitted the suspension units and started to take some measurements. After we found the right spot, we started to build a mould for the rear suspension and the footrest. With the mould ready we can start building the rear pipes of the frame. Notwithstanding we are in the middle of the winter with snow on the streets, i can hardly wait to try her out for the first time. And to make things worse and give myself some pressure i booked a trackday at Mettet for the 6th of June yesterday.

Post subject: | Building rear part of the frame
This is a detail picture from the footrest on the left handsight, the standing pipe is already in place and the spot were the second pipe for the footrest will cross back has just been marked: Here we see details of the top mounting point for the rear suspensions, after the initial design for the bracket we had some discussion about it's strength and went back to the drawingbord. This is the second attempt, which is much larger and will be weld onto both pipes: This is the same mounting point from the inside, you can clearly see we do a lot of work to get every part as light as possible with a reasonable marge of strength and savefty: Even the mounting point for the footrest went to the weight watchers, after a training at the drilling machine, it came back 12 grams lighter: This is the footrest on the left with the second cross pipe in the making: Here we have a better view from the mounting point for the suspension from the rear. because of the small amount of space it was quite difficult to get the top to fight in the right line with the middle cross pipes:

Post subject: | The concept of our frame
Do to work commitments i didn't get much time to get some work done on the frame the last week. But we finished the concept, all the main pipes are tack welled in place: The next step will be to welled all the pipes together. After that we can start on the detailwork like ignition, coil, battery and vent placings. Especially the battery will give us some headache as we want a modern weight distribution with 50/50 on both wheels. We will use a light battery build up from A123 cells(hidding in an old style battrybox), but with enough power to start the engine and run lights when we need to race in the early night time. This will probebly find a place in the front of the frame. Which creats a new problem: we would like to remove the tank fast in case of an emergency. What makes the mountingpoints for the tank and seat on the frame an interesting challange. We also need to design the plates we want to strengthen the headstock.

Post subject: | the seat | ||
This is what happens when you don't want to fit on our frame: The seat just didn't want to fit over the top position of the rearsuspension. So i had to start modifining it and one cut let to the next, and now it's in 5 pieces. But not to worry it already back to 3 pieces. More pictures will follow soon.

I the meantime feiko has welded the frame together and has started on the mountingpoints for the tank: More pictures will follow after the holidays. For everybody how enjoyed watching us at this topic: We wish everyone all the best for 2011 and many kilometers on there TT bikes next year.

Hello Remco and Ted, I am enjoying your build story very much, thanks. What forks and triple clamps are you using? I see upside down forks but it's hard to see on the small picture. All the best to you for 2011. Graeme |

Post subject: | Re:Frontforks and triple clamps |
Hoi Graeme, The WP upside down was only on top of the frame mold to get the handle bars in place with the tank and seat, to find the right spot for the footrests. We will use modified marzocchi 38mm forks from a Le mans, because of the rule book that comes with the classic endurance class we want to race in. The triple clamps we will use are our own design, made by my friend Bart, they will have varible off set. We will normally race with 18" wheels as they are also required in the rule books of the organizers. Groet remco |
