A few Swedish built Moranis in between!

Next up is Tomas Sandströms TT1 with the new type Verlicchi frame with the bent tube at the rear cylinder. Tomas has been linked with MC-Collection (who sold the bikes at the Las Vegas auction in January) for many years, helping them with restorations and events. Tomas was not involved in the restoration of the production TT1, that was done before the museum bought it, but he had a good master for this bike regarding paint, details etc.

This bike was originally built by Claes Gruvald who sourced the parts from different places, for example the engine from Guido Wagner in Hamburg. Claes raced with it a couple of years, but it did not have the proper TT1 look then, for example not the correct fairing. When Tomas bought it he made as he wanted; really close to TT1 looks even though it does not have all the correct components. Besides the frame it sports a swingarm from WBO, but Tomas plans to replace it with a steel one. Suspension, wheels and brakes are top standard and it handles really well. It has had close to standard tuning up to now, but this year new pistons with higher compression, ST2 cams and Carlo ported heads are fitted. I have been lucky enough to race it a couple of times and with the right setup there is no problem with passing the CBR600:s on the outside in the long carousel right hander at Anderstorp!

Between 1999 and 2006 I worked as sales manager for Ducati in Sweden and Norway. My colleague back then who was responsible for aftermarket, Henrik Nyberg, started to collect parts for building a TT2. He never had an ambitious time plan and when there was a fire in the motorcycle club that he is a member in he kind of lost interest and sold it all off. Buyer Thomas Hauge (originally Norwegian but living in Sweden for many years) has continued the project but apparently changed its direction from ”real” (early) TT2 to a more modern TT. But as far as I know there is no real developments and I cant find any informations or pictures on the web. Maybe somebody out there knows more?

During our time working for Ducati we once had the benefit to borrow a couple of bikes from the Ducati museum for a seminar we had at a technical university in Sweden. Filippo Preziosi was a much appreciated guest speaker talking about engine performance, development and the importance of Demsodromic valve train for Ducati. The bikes we borrowed were one F1 and one 888. The triple eight looked more a real racer than the F1, but probably had both of them been test- or sparebikes for the teams or specific races.

One of my very first racing experiences with Ducati was in 1985 when I just had my F1 cleared the national registration and took of to Anderstorp over Midsummer weekend to watch the 6H Endurance race there. I bought one of the first five F1:s in Sweden that arrived in the spring (another three, F1B, arrived during summer) and in Anderstorp I saw one of the other five competing, plus a Norwegian F1A.

The Swedish one was owned by Göran Alden, part time teacher, Ducati dealer and racing driver. Hed had a history with bevel drive Ducati in various national classes and jumped directly at the F1 when it was released. He took part in the endurance race together with co-driver Alf Carlsson. They crashed, I think at least twice, dont know who but I think Carlsson, and they did not make it to the finish unfortunately. Göran Alden then bought a Montjuich the year after but never made it to the racetrack again as far as I know. As a riderat least, he has been managing the time keeping for our vintage racing for many years now. He owned both bikes for a few years, then sold the F1 after getting it back to original condition again, he still owns the Monthjuich, with less than 1000kms on the clock!

The Norwegian F1 was owned and raced by Bue David-Andersen, by then the importer in Norway. He had started building his TT2 at this time and the Campagnolo front wheel is an evidence, originally supplied for his racer but replaced by an 18” front wheel during the build. This F1 was the only A model coming into Norway and was different to the Swedish ones. It had a black stripe between the red, white and green color fields and a Silentium silencer instead of a Conti as was standard. It looked similar on a distance though. Bue did not race in the 6H race but in a sprint race that weekend. And being Midsummer, of course it rained...

1987 I started working in a motorcycle shop in Malmö in the south of Sweden an also took my racing license. The workshop we co-operated with was owned by Olle ”Ollenelli” Andersson and started racing at the same time, as well with a F1, but he had a -86 model. We produced our own fibreglass racing fairings an seat and Olle had a background as a car painted so took care of the paintjob. His bike had that extra touch. For the 1988 season he bought a 851 Superbike Kit with which he was one of most successful riders in the BoTT series in Scandinavia. He also raced internationally and even at Daytona at least once, maybe twice. His brother Jörgen took over the F1 and raced a couple of seasons with it. He fitted Marvic bolted wheels a la Montjuich on it.

A very nice looking race-prepped F1, at the time owned and raced by Björn Anton Andersson! Björn Anton ran the gas station at Gothenburg airport and had a small collection of nice bikes, mainly English. The F1 was converted back to street bike after a couple of sesaons and sold.

Not as nice looking was this Danish 750 with a home built aluminium frame. A bit typical for a home brewed racer from the mid-80:s is the mix between new an old. On one hand an aluminium frame and rear suspension with rising rate linkage, and on the other hand 18 inch wheels and a 35 mm front fork with the small calipers from a Morini 350. I have no idea what became of this bike and only saw it a handful of times on the tracks.
