Well, the motor on The Yellow Bike (Gary's old racer) is just about done and I should have the wheels and frame back from the coater on Tuesday, so it's finally assembly time. One of the biggest problems I had to face was that of finding a way to run the pick-up wires out of the case now that I'm running a charging system. Gary used the port for the alternator wires to run the pick-up wires and I briefly thought of drilling and tapping into the blind casting in the cases so I could run a gland nut, but that meant I had to find a super-long drill bit, build a broach to keep it centered, and... Anyway, I found that the 2002 900SS engine side cover that was left over from the 853 motor had a nice facing and port for the old ECU sensor and with a bit of Dremmel work, I could run the pick-up wires up to a gland nut that I installed. Once I get the frame installed I can trim back the length on the upper oil line feed lines. Gary - I loved the reducers you used in the top end oil line (idle jets). Your turn Gary...

Those sure are purty bolts on that thing, Steve. Must have cost a small fortune.

Recently I tapped into the front of an 800 engine to install the nut for Kokusan pickup wires. The circle is still cast in in the front. Used smaller drills to center and start, and worked my way up. Then went to the dremel tool to get the proper diameter. Finally the big 'ole tap was used. It was spooky at first, but it went in plumb. Surprised myself.

Thanks for the photos. Now if Gary would reciprocate.

Steve and MikeV,

I'm up for the challenge, but don't know if my bike can ever be as pretty as Steve's. (I have to figure out the picture loading process and upload the before and in progress pictures.)

I am still struggling with what the bikes end use will be (street and some track or mostly track). My racing buddies are really trying to talk me into coming back out and racing some.

Steve,
Any problems with those aluminum bolts? A friend was running those on his race bike and had a lot of problems with breaking them, freezing in place or leaks. What kind of paint did you use on the motor, looks good. I had stripped the paint off the heads to try and get better heat dissipation, but not sure if it helped or not.

Mike:

I thought of that when I hit the "desperate" stage, and then I saw the 900SS cover andf thought it would be cool to get the leads away from the exhaust pipe. Worked out well I think.

Gary:

That was my first try with big, hi-rez pictures. See the "Upload Attachment" tab below the Post Reply Edit box. Pick the images off your hard drive, Add the file et Voila!

I use DupliColor Engine Enamel - Lo Gloss Black. With the engine assembled on the engine stand and the shiny bits masked-off, I do two applications of laquer thinner (spray, blow-off, repeat) and then put a portable baseboard heater under the engine and a moving blanket over it to pre-heat it to 90-100 degrees. Spray a light coat and bake again. Do this two more times. They're thin coats, so they don't have an impact on heat dissipation like the factory finish.

I've never had an issue with aluminum fasteners, although I use Locktite blue so I don't have to over-torque and to prevent seizing.

Hey Gary.. We each have our strengths - you do outstanding engineering that I couldn't even dream of..

BTW, have you dug out of that storm?

I've been chipping away at the project as time allows (which for the past week hasn't been much), but got a good couple of hours in today...

Wha Steve,
The bike is looking good. I see a lot of nice little changes. Here are some before pictures of the Street F1.

Thanks, Gary - glad you like the yellow bike so far.. How about some work in progress pics on yours?

The bodywork came back from Cris today, so I took a few minutes to bolt on the fender and put the tank and seat in place..

Steve,
I wish I had some progress on the F1 Project. Not gotten very far yet. New tank and tail piece. Swingarm has been built using an 851 swingarm with the bridge from a cracked 900ss. Same exact front end as your bike and I got an Ohlins shock setup with ride height and valving to way I think it should be. I still have to figure out the electrical system and install mounting tabs. I'm thinking about one of the light weight batteries and may be an all electrical instrument cluster.

Lookin' good, Gary. I'm really liking the swing arm. You're not that far behind me - I still have the electrical and exhaust to tackle. I hope you're planning on Mosport.. Paul (who bought my old bike) can lap Mosport as fast as me and that means the three of us could have an exciting 3 days..

BTW, what's the cush drive pattern on the Yellow Bike?
