The weather here in the Bay Area has been pretty nice for the past couple of weeks and I've had some time to lavish some love on my F1. My goal for the machine is to return her to stock mechanical and cosmetic condition, while preserving her original patina. I've got enough motorcycles that are perfectly shiny and I like the stories that are told in each nick, burnished paint spot, and slightly corroded fastener. That said, I do want her to be mechanically sound and safe. I spooned on some new tires and installed a new rear sprocket (the chain and countershaft sprocket were new when I got her) and have removed the later model clutch and brake master cylinders and front brake calipers. They are available by the way, including the caliper adapter brackets, if anyone is interested. Again, outright performance is not what I'm looking for on this motorcycle and I'd prefer to ride and enjoy her as she was originally built. I have a 916 and an 851 if I feel like I need to brake harder, lean farther, and go faster. I've also temporarily installed the center stand while I'm doing some work on the rest of the motorcycle. I will likely have to have a new exhaust header fabricated as the original one is cracked and probably not fixable. I've not located a source for a replacement yet.

I have two questions about missing components on the bike. First is the center stand springs. I'm missing them. Does anyone have a recommendation on a source for them? It looks like there were originally two installed on the bike. I suppose I could just find the right length at the local hardware store but wanted to consult the wisdom of the forum before chasing that wild goose. Secondly, I'm curious if anyone knows how the oil cooler was mounted to the bracket that it hangs from. Was there originally some sort of rubber band on each end? The previous owner used some wire to attach it, and I'm not at all happy with the way it looks or performs. I'm curious what other owners have done to theirs.

I did take her out for a ride yesterday and every time I ride it I'm impressed with it. It's pretty much my favorite motorcycle right now. It's just so fun to ride, and I'm still amazed at how something so small can be so loud. This from a guy who owns a KTM 900 Adventure with Akrapovic cans, a 916 with Termignonis, and an 851. Man that Verlicchi exhaust makes some noise!

Hi TJ, If I remember correctly it was basically a thick 'o' ring that held the cooler to those little brackets. At least that's how it was on my early F1a. Maybe Steve Munro has those springs, I'll look in my parts tomorrow. Do you need all of them? Lou

Hi Lou,

Thanks for your response. Yeah, I need both center stand springs. Regarding the oil cooler, that's how I figured they were mounted. I should be able to find a reasonable replacement at the hardware store.

You didn't mention what year your bike is, but if you're chasing the original 2 into 1 headers, Ian Gowanloch may be able to help you (I got a set 6 months ago & he was selling a few on e-bay around the same time).

She's an 87 F1B. I did try Gowanloch a few months back and at the time they had nothing. =(

Wonder why it's bare, not black chromed?

I was under the impression they were all bare - just the Conti's were black chromed? I had mine ceramic coated in a matt black finish for $100 & they came up a treat.

Possibly a lot of Ian's items came from the factory throw out back in the Cagiva clean out?
