Hello,
Do any of you preparation guys have opinions about the best ignition boxes to use for competition on a 1988 F1 machine ?
Thanks in advance,

Ie Dog,
The Ducati Performance boxes were actually a little cheaper in price then standard boxes last time I had to purchase some, but on the dyno I have never seen any difference. The "88 F1 takes the same boxes as any of the carb 750/900ss or monsters.

Gary,
When looking over your dyno data was there any evidence of different advance curves? I was told there were two different Kokusan advance profiles but never was in a position to verify that claim.
Thanks and all the best,
Fran

Fran, We ran two different Kokason ignition boxes back to back on the dyno on one of the F1 race motors. The boxes we ran, were the Ducati Performance Boxes (Pederzini AL/9000 1.1 release) and stock P/N BB1105. We ran them on a Dynojet dyno so we could only see the acceleration curve (hp and torque) but if you layed them over each other they were the same. I have hear of a Pederzini AL/9000 3.0 release but have never seen any. My suggestion is to spend some time at the dyno playing with the timing. I have been able to pick up a couple of horsepower with just finding the the best power at full advance timing and it does vary from one motor combination to the next. For Steve's bike it's 32 degrees max with 6 degrees at idle. Palmer

If anyone is interested, here are the mapping curves for the different boxes from the catalog: AL9000 1.1 for improved torque @low revs AL9000 2.4 top end power @high revs AL9000 3.0 top end power @high revs, racing motors

As we are nearly into 2011, that's very interesting.
Thanks

Horst, What flywheels were these graphs generated with? Because with the 1.1 boxes and a lighten stock flywheel we didn't see that advance curve. Our timing would go to 36 degrees. We had to shorten the trailing edge lump on the flywheel to limit full advance. With the 2.4 box how do you get it to start and idle with no advance?
Who handles these ignition boxes and any idea on cost?

Hallo Palmer, as I have mentioned above, these ignition curves are from the Ducati accessories catalog. AL9000 1.1, Art.No 09098 AL9000 2.4, Art.No 09099 AL9000 3.0, Art.No 09117 don't expect that the boxes are still available, but with ignition boxes like the (at least in Germany) popluar ICIP4 ( http://www.ignitech.cz/english/aindex.htm) you can directly program the curves with the provided program. hope that helps horst

Hi Horst,
Yes, I purchased one of the ICIP4 units to try. I got the one for converting late model 800 from fuel injection to carbs, which uses the single point pickup at the half shaft. When the Project F1 gets completed that is.
