My new F1 (Gary Palmer's old bike) is on the lift and I've started into the process of making it mine without adding any weight to the machine. Adding the charging system and removing the muffler had a net gain of 1.2lbs and I still have to float the rear brake, swap to clip-ons with risers and go to a full F1 fairing upper - so I'm looking at titanium fasteners to balance things out. I've hit the obvious suppliers: Pro-bolt, Corsa Meccanica, Baller, and Race Bolts. Yesterday, I discovered Toronto Cycles (who cater to the bicycle crowd) and offer some pretty good prices..

Is there anyone else I should be looking at?

Thanks, Dan..

I'll post my spreadsheet when I'm done buying, but here's what I've found out in the North American market:
Toronto Cycles (bicycle specialists) have the best prices for mid-sized and longer M6 bolts and pretty much all M8 and M10 - as well as for nylock and shouldered bolts. They're limited on the really long and larger fasteners.. http://www.torontocycles.com/Selling/Titanium_Bolts.html.

Corse Meccanica have the best prices on most M6 bolts and all drilled Ti washers. Now, if only they'd answer my email and voicemail... http://www.corsemeccanica.com/titanium_nuts.htm.

Pro-Bolt USA have the best price on smaller M6 bolts and in a lot of cases, they win out simply because they're the only ones offering the larger or specialty-sized fasteners - otherwise, they're completely out of the ball-park. http://www.probolt-usa.com/.

And I found that Baller http://ballerbolts.com/index.html, Tekbolt http://www.tekbolt.com/default.asp and Race Bolts either lost out on price or selection.

. . . nice list of supplyers !
Titanium bolts on my bike is on my "to do" list but I always wondered are they just as strong as the steel 10.9 and 12.9 bolts whitch you use on brake calipers or on the bolts that clamp both yokes ?
How can you find out what the strenght rate is on a titanium bolt, is it stamped on the serface just like steel bolts ?
I am a little worried that a supplyer tells you a differnt story than it actual is . . . . in regards to the safety of you and the bike you have to know sure, don't you ?

Hi,
Have you tried Fred at Yoyodyne? I have found in the past though what he has in stock may be sketchy.

Mettec has some very long M10 X 1.25 bolts . they can be used as engine mounting bolts with the correct nuts

Thanks - Yeah; now that I've established that I'm unlikely to hear back from Corse Meccanica, I've reworked the monster spreadsheet with MetTec picking up about 15% and Race Tech about 20%. I know Fred at Yoyodyne really well, but I took a quick look at his pricing and moved on...

Hey, Andre:

As long as you're buying Grade 5 from someone reputable, you're getting stuff that's up to the task. Of course anyone can say it's Grade 5 - which is where the reputable supplier comes in. From Wikipedia:
Grade 5, also known as Ti6Al4V, Ti-6Al-4V or Ti 6-4, is the most commonly used alloy. It has a chemical composition of 6% aluminium, 4% vanadium, 0.25% (maximum) iron, 0.2% (maximum) oxygen, and the remainder titanium.[3] Grade 5 is used extensively in Aerospace, Medical, Marine, and Chemical Processing.[4] It is used for connecting rods in ICEs. It is significantly stronger than commercially pure titanium while having the same stiffness and thermal properties.[5] Among its many advantages, it is heat treatable. This grade is an excellent combination of strength, corrosion resistance, weld and fabricability. In consequence, its uses are numerous such as for military aircraft or turbines. It is also used in surgical implants.[3] Generally, it is used in applications up to 400 degrees Celsius. Its properties are very similar to those of the 300 stainless steel series, especially 316.

Okay Steve . . . Thanks for the info, this clears a lot.
So it's just best to buy with a reputable company instead of "made in China" stuff or from some unknown oriënt company.

Thanks again !

André
