After Barber last year I had the opportunity to buy a friends 1999 Ducati 750ss race bike. The bike had a lot of cool parts (One of the last sets of Dymags,90 housepower motor, Doug Cook exhaust, Ohlins, full adjustable fork, composite tank, adjustable triple clamps, etc.) The original plan was to buy the bike for the billet Brembo narrow band caliper for my F1 and part it out or sell it as a street bike. As I got to working on it I decided to make it my street bike but it had to be comfortable and have an upright riding postion. Here are some picture of how the bike turned out. Since this is an on going project there's more to come.

Nice job, Gary! I saw the "before", so I can appreciate how much the machine has changed.

You're right; that fairing really works with the whole package.

Did the swap over to carbs work out OK?

Funny us should ask, as that's my next installment. When planning to sell the bike I used the late model 750 bottom end that I had in the Street F1 with 650 heads and installed the original 750ss heads that came as spares with the bike. (Bruce Meyer porting and 900 carb cams). I could not get the bike to run very well and took it to the dyno to have the Power Commander programed. First the Throttle Position Sensor went bad, then no matter what changes were made to the fuel on the vertical cylinder no change to the air/fuel ratio. Time to buy a new Power Commander -NOT. I don't like things I can fix. At this time I decided to keep the bike as my street bike as the handling and riding position worked real well. So what do you do if you have a 90 hp race motor sitting under the bench, lower the compression and use it. I had built this motor for my friend at the begining of last season and it didn't have much time on it so out came the 12 to 1 Pistal pistons and in went stock 800 piston which are 10.3 to 1 and in the bike it went. Since fuel injection was giving me issue on to Keihin FCR carbs. I got a used set of 39mm from Lon Allen and modified them to fit. I did want to change from the stock FI ignition, so I adapted the stock TPS to vertical carb. After setting the carbs a home and getting a good running bike, off to the dyno to check the jetting. Wow, what a shock 86.03 horsepower on the same dyno I tune the race F1 (which make 86 hp). The only change on the dyno was to reduce the accelorator shot. The bike is a real joy to ride and have about 600 miles on it so far - more to come.

Hi Gary,
Nice bike! What is the front master? Are those R90s bars? And, I can't really make out the wheels. Are the Dymags still on it? The rear reminds me of a Marvic. Any concerns running mag wheels on the streets?

Hi Bill,

The front master is radial master off a Yamaha R1, bars are off a Buell X1, the low version and the wheel are magnesium, the front is a Marchesini and the rear is a Technomag. The Dymags are really nice wheels without a scratch on them so their in the basement. I have run mag wheels on the street before with no issues, they sure make the bike work better and no sense just having all this stuff laying around in the garage or basement.
